Maynooth Scholars Sweep STS Order of Merit Titles

Maynooth University has a storied history in The R&A Student Tour Series, and that legacy has now been further enriched. In a remarkable achievement, Maynooth scholars Kate Lanigan and Ryan Griffin clinched the women’s and men’s order of merit titles, respectively, after the final event of the 2023/24 season at the iconic STS – St Andrews.

Weathering the Elements

The Old Course at St Andrews greeted the golfers with sodden and almost sullen conditions. It's debatable whether there have been three days of worse weather at the home of golf since Old Tom Morris graced its fairways.

Lucy Jameson's Chilled Victory

Women’s STS – St Andrews winner Lucy Jameson braved the elements, shivering noticeably as she stepped off the 18th green. The cold seeped into her very core, but her triumph on golf’s most iconic course warmed her spirits.

Double Delight for Griffin

Ryan Griffin secured a double delight by winning the final event of the season, marking his second consecutive order of merit title and his third STS victory. His 180 points gave him a comfortable lead over Halmstad’s Hugo Stark.

Lanigan's Narrow Victory

Kate Lanigan, the order of merit leader heading into the final event, edged out Halmstad student Elice Fredriksson by a mere three points. Lanigan and Griffin now earn automatic places in The Amateur and Women’s Amateur Championships.

“This is the most special moment I’ve had on a golf course because I knew I needed to win to guarantee the order of merit,” said Griffin. “And to win around St Andrews doesn’t really get any better. It’s unbelievable.”

Lanigan’s crucial putt on the 18th green saved her order of merit victory, securing Maynooth’s historic sweep of both men’s and women’s titles.
